The Rector of Stellenbosch University, Professor Russel Botman, is an internationally-known theologian who has advised the World Alliance of Reformed Churches in Geneva on several issues. He is currently President of the South African Council of Churches. Professor Botman joined Stellenbosch University in 2000 as Professor in the Department of Practical Theology and Missiology and was appointed as Vice Rector in 2002.
Professor Botman has received several awards for his work, including an award from the Town Council of Milwaukee in the US as a leading champion for justice and humaness. He also currently the Chairperson of the ABSA Klein Karoo Kunstefees.
Professor Botman will be speaking to the Cape Town Press Club on "The Role of Afrikaans within education and society at large’. He will be discussing the current debates on language policy at the university, the challenges it faces and how it plans to overcome these in the years to come.
