Mokena Makeka, 33, is the brains behind the redesign of Cape Town Station for the new public transport system. He founded his own business mere months after completing his studies and believes "great architecture and design is a human right".
Makeka graduated with distinction from UCT in 2001 and won a scholarship to do his Masters in City Planning and Urban Design. During that time, he entered an international design competition to create a new museum for Robben Island. His design won second prize against massive competition from experienced professionals in the field all over the world and says this inspired him to launch his own business straight after university.
This month, he won the top prize in the design category of another national competition and is putting his R125 000 prize towards the establishment of the Academy for Leadership and Creative Excellence (ACE) which he hopes will help develop the creative sector, something he says is essential to nurture "in order to meet the challenges of a development state".
He will address the club on how one can integrate modern design into the colonial Cape heritage to bring our modern cities alive for all our citizens. He will take questions.
