Judge Nathan Erasmus is Chairman of NICRO and has presided over some of Cape Town’s most controversial and interesting cases. He headed the Erasmus Commission which was set up to investigate claims that the DA and the City of Cape Town were involved in spying. He was also the judge in the trial of Hard Livings gang leader, Rashied Staggie.
Judge Erasmus has been involved with NICRO since the early 1980's. NICRO’s goal is to break the cycle of crime and secure a safe South Africa.
Sharing his own expertise in criminal law and assisting with programmes and internal structure, Judge Erasmus has drafted many papers and addressed conferences on NICRO's behalf. NICRO has also been instrumental in working towards developing a child justice system which culminated into the recently introduced Child Justice Act.
Judge Erasmus has been active in many spheres connected to the criminal justice system. His address to the Cape Town Press Club comes as NICRO celebrates its 100th anniversary. This is a huge milestone for the NGO, which offers a range of successful specialized programmes designed to rehabilitate offenders, ranging from drug rehabilitation and life skills to community service and victim offender mediation.
