Judge Dennis Davis - on South Africa's tax situation and the state of SARS

Judge Dennis Davis: on South Africa’s tax situation and the state of SARS.

Judge Dennis Davis, chairperson of the Davis Tax Committee (previously known as the Tax Review Committee, which advises government, particularly Treasury, on tax policy) will update the Cape Town Press Club on the outcomes of the committee’s deliberations.

The Davis Tax Committee concluded its report in March 2018. Justice Davis last updated the press club on its progress in 2015.

At the Nugent Commission of Inquiry into SARS recently, Justice Davis said there was a need for the restructuring of the South African Revenue Service (SARS). He backed calls for an independent advisory panel to oversee the work of the tax collector.

Davis will answer questions on tax policies and the direction which the country ought to take in the post-Zupta phase of governance.

Judge Dennis Davis is an all-rounder South African. A judge of the High Court and President of the Competition Appeal Court, he still finds time to teach constitutional law and tax law at the Department of Commercial Law at UCT.
