Janet Heard @ The Tavola Restaurant, Claremont

Janet Heard recently returned from Cambridge in the US after spending a year at Harvard University as a 2009/10 Nieman Fellow of journalism.

On her return, she moved to the Cape Times as Assistant Editor, Head of News. Previously, she had been Executive Editor of the Weekend Argus, and before that, News Editor at the Cape Argus.

After graduating from Rhodes University, Janet started her career as a cub reporter at The Star during the height of the state of emergency in 1988. She was part of the team that covered the unbanning of the ANC and release of Mandela.

During her career, she has been a writer and also a sub-editor, all on newspapers (including 5 years as a senior reporter at the Sunday Times), except for a three-year stint at Femina magazine. She has also spent 3 years overseas, working at The Age in Melbourne and South China Morning Post in Hong Kong.

In the US, she broke her fear of New Media. She started a personal blog (www.janetheard.blogspot.com), experimented with Twitter and social media tools.

She returned to South Africa in the celebratory afterglow of the World Cup, and soon after, the ominous threats to freedom of the press.
