Ferial Haffajee @ The Grill Room

(Note early time for brunch)

Ferial Haffajee is editor-in-chief of City Press, having previously held the same position at the Mail & Guardian. Under her editorship, journalists have broken some of the major political issues of the day and she has helped foster the investigative journalism that’s crucial for combating corruption in a developing democracy. Ms Haffajee has faced lawyers in court hours before the papers hit the streets and on one occasion had to have thousands of copies pulped when Imvume’s lawyers were able to secure an interdict against the Mail & Guardian.

In her writing on contentious issues she cites as her reference points the public’s right to know, the rule of law and the Constitution and rule of law. She mused on this in her recent column on whether Zapiro’s cartoon on the Prophet should have been published, on whether outside toilets are a gauge of how far our democracy has progressed. She also dwelt on how it felt to enjoy singing Die Stem at the soccer.

Ms Haffajee is a previous winner of the Shoprite-Checkers woman of the year award, The Media magazine’s women in media award and a Sanlam financial journalism award. In 2008, she was named a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum. She has also worked at Financial Mail and at the SABC in both radio and television.

She will take questions.
