The "Brown Envelope" scandal, the Protection of Information Bill and the Media Tribunal: where is South Africa and the media heading?

 

Chris Whitfield is the editor-in-chief of Independent Newspapers Cape. He was previously editor of the Cape Times, Cape Argus and Weekend Argus and deputy editor of the Sunday Independent in Johannesburg. He covered the South African transition as a political correspondent for The Mercury and The Star and also worked as a London correspondent for the then Argus Group. He has been in journalism for 25 years after beginning his career on the Natal Witness.

 

Whitfield will be a guest of the club to speak about recent developments in the South African media, including the so-called “Brown Envelope” revelations and the State’s assault on the media.
